The Wikipedia article on Wikipedia mentions Esperanto.

Mike Jones's picture

Wikipedia has, naturally, an article on itself, explaining its philosophy, etc. It so happens that in that article Esperanto is mentioned explicitly - not on account of Vikipedio, but on account of the role of Unicode in enabling the use of other languages. The relevant passage (under "Language editions") is, "The coexistence of multilingual content on Wikipedia is made possible by Unicode, whose support was first introduced into Wikipedia in January 2002 by Brion Vibber after he had similarly implemented the alphabet of Esperanto." Are you in hot water with Esperanto?

Mike Jones's picture

What does Esperanto have to do with dunking your produce in hot water? It turns out, according to a recent Yahoo News story, that this is an easy way to prolong their freshness. Well, this is just another case where they could have been talking about Esperanto, right? Here is the comment that I posted to the story:

"Learning Esperanto has the same effect on your native language (English, in this case): It helps you preserve your knowledge of grammatical structures and useful phraseology."

And here is the link to the story:

Link-Based Word-Extensions

Mike Jones's picture

I have begun a website of link-based word-extensions. This consists of linking words to web pages where they play a significant role. For example, the word "hope" links to Esperanto (the home page of this website), as do the words "auxiliary" and "international".

Link-Based Word-Extensions is item #179 in my Public Domain Materials website:

Monthly Mathematics Circular

Mike Jones's picture

I have started a monthly Mathematics circular.
It is item #177 in the table of contents of my public domain materials website:

http://www.public-domain-materials.com/table-of-contents.html

Note: I have upgraded my website address, dropping the "weebly" designation. (However, the old address will automatically forward to my new address.)

My website address is now:

www.public-domain-materials.com

An Esperanto version of the circular is available at the same location.

typo in E-USA book invoice

Mike Jones's picture

It seems to me that there is a typo in the book invoice used by E-USA, namely, the text "Addressee/Sendato". At the very least, "Sendato" should be changed to "Alsendato", because "sendato" means "one who is being sent", NOT "addressee". But the deeper issue is that this text should not be using the term "addressee" in the first place, as it sounds too much like the associated text "Ship to/ Sendu al". I believe the traditional text used is "Billing Address", so, this should be "Billing Address/Faktura Adreso", right?

Big Cheese Quotes

Mike Jones's picture

While browsing the web, I happened across a list of quotes by Joe Anthony Blum. The list is bilingual: English and Esperanto. I don't know if it's ever been mentioned in this forum, but even if it has, it is such an extensive and impressive list that it deserves mention again. Here is the link:

Formulo por la Leĝo de Engel

Mike Jones's picture

The Extension of English

Mike Jones's picture

Here's the link to a cute poem titled "The Extension of English", in which the author laments the deliberate wordiness used by English speakers. I was wondering whether there is a similar trend in other languages, including Esperanto.

typo in website

Mike Jones's picture

The "Join E-USA" menu item in the menu bar contains a typo. One of the items in its drop-down menu is "Contact Us". Holding the mouse on "Contact Us" results in an obsolete explanatory text, namely, "How to communicate with ELNA".

fyi.
