Well, we (the Eastern Iowa Esperanto Society; see below) had our first Meet-Up today. There were 2 of us and the other person was one of the people who came to the University of Iowa Esperanto League meetings from 3 years ago (unfortunately, the other three people who came then are now living far away from Iowa City). Hopefully, we will be able to entice more local Esperantists to meetings. There are two in the area that didn't make it who I will be contacting personally this week.
Does E-USA still send contact information to local groups when a person in their area contacts E-USA?
I've always been a trifle put off by the melody that "La Espero" is usually sung to. Sounds so.......19th century brass-bandy.....almost "too cutesy" to me.
Of late I seem to be remembering seeing another melody used but for the life of me can't remember where it was. Maybe I'm just getting senile or maybe my wishful thinking is interfering with my perception of (past) reality. Anyone ever hear (of) another melody used for this poem?
Is anyone that lives within 250 miles of eastern Iowa going to be going to TAKE this year who would be willing to ride share? I'm getting to the point in vacation and monetary status that I can start attending Esperanto events on a somewhat regular basis. I would love to buddy-go with someone! I'll be in St. Louis in May.
OK, I was surfing today and came across the Modern Language Association site about languages reported on the 2000 census. Of course, Esperanto wasn't listed. I had assumed that it was because there weren't enough to register on their radar. Then I clicked on the Faroese section: 60 people in the entire country. Now, I KNOW there are more than 60 speakers of Esperanto living in the United States. How about we all note on the census forms in 2010 that we speak Esperanto. This would at least get us a blip on the government's radar screen.
