Ambiguities
Being a teacher of English has made me more alert to noticing ambiguities in language (that is, in phraseology), especially when the two meanings are antonymous. Here is one that I ran across in the latest issue of UEA’s “Esperanto” magazine (that is, the issue of January 2011), on p.16:
“limigo de helpo al fidindaj senkoruptaj ŝtatoj”
The intended parsing is obviously “(limigo de helpo) al (fidindaj senkoruptaj ŝtatoj)”, but another possible parsing is “limigo de (helpo al fidindaj senkoruptaj ŝtatoj)”. The two parsings are, of course, quite contradictory! The same problem occurs in English: “limitation of help to trustworthily uncorrupt regimes”…
