Two-Way Dictionary
A few days ago, I received an e-mail from someone in Canada who is planning to teach an Esperanto course to 45 students.
He was looking for a good, inexpensive, two-way English and Esperanto dictionary.
I was somewhat ashamed to admit that Esperanto-USA does not have such a dictionary.
The Beginner's Compact Dictionary by P. V. RANGANAYAKULU is so fraught with errors that the author has decided not to reprint it.
The Pocket Esperanto dictionary by MCLINEN costs almost $25.00 and Don Harlow's comment is 'Use with some care'.
BENSON's Dictionary is only one-way, and the Mini-Dictionary by GRIMLEY EVANS is too limited.
The Teach Yourself Dictionary is no longer in print.
I started to think about how a useful two-way dictionary for beginners would be organized, and I came to the following conclusions.
The English-Esperanto section would contain minimal entries, referring only to the Esperanto root word.
Example: pack - pak'
Derived English words like 'Package' would not be listed in the English-Esperanto section, but would be shown in the Esperanto section.
If an English word has multiple Esperanto translations, multiple roots would be shown.
Example: interest - interes', interez'
Words which have a myriad of meanings such as 'get' and 'set' would point to other English words whenever possible.
Example: get - -> receive, acquire, attain, convince, [there would be many entries here]
Words in English that are translated into Esperanto using the mal prefix would point to the root Esperanto word
Example: dark - lum', hel', fi' ->obscure
The Esperanto-English section would have entries similar to that of Butler or Milledge - including root category, transitivity, the appropriate preposition to use with a specific verb, examples of affixes where the meaning is not obvious, etc.

As someone commented, Wells
As someone commented, Wells will be republishing his dictionary soon.
Which McLinen did Don comment on? I have the 2001 edition from UEA (blue and white cover) and I use in place of the Wells dictionary and haven't run across any problems -- of course, I don't refer to it as often as a beginner would.
As Lee also says, the Butler dictionary is invaluable. I use it exactly as you describe: after referring to one or more other English-to-Esperanto dictionaries, I then look up the proposed Esperanto roots in Butler, to see which one best fits, using the "see also" references in Butler to find similar roots that might have a better nuance.
If any dictionary should have a warning on it, it's the Benson dictionary. I don't use anything from that book without confirming it with another source. The fact that it has an appendix at the end of roots that Benson himself made up to use in the dictionary is the first sign of trouble.

Universala Vortaro
Many years ago, my brother Phil typed in the Universala Vortaro. I still keep that file around and carry it around on my portable electronic devices. It's just a text file, so its easy to search for either an English word or an Esperanto word to find the equivalence. It doesn't have modern words or neologisms, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

2-way dictionary
John Wells has finished revising his dictionary, and it will be published in a new edition by Mondial in New York. No publication date has been announced, but I'd expect it relatively soon. The first edition of this dictionary has always functioned well for me as my "every day" dictionary, and I'm sure the 2nd edition will be equally useful. It doesn't have some of the detail of Butler, but it's more than enough for most needs.
So I'd encourage everyone to watch for the availability of this dictionary--it will be well worth buying when it's published.

Dictionary
I don't know if you have checked eBay recently but in the last month or so I have sold 4 Esperanto dictionaries & it might not be a bad idea to check eBay every once in a while. My mother was active in Esperanto circles from 1939 through the 80s & I have a lot of Esperanto memorabilia I have been selling on eBay.
The current quandry is where to list the many Esperanto pins I have available on eBay. There are so many categories ......I'm overwhelmed. The dictionaries & memorabilia were easier as I could put that in Collectibles - I guess maybe I will list them there too. There isn't really a category for Esperanto pins and there is such a variety of them!
My handle on eBay is Rainbowhibiscus which is the reason the the hibiscus photo associated with me.
Thanks for listening & let me know if you are looking for something in particular of Esperanto. I have mail in lessons and many flyers & brochures yet to post.

Electronic Dictionary - 3 free!
Hi, I have recently begun learning Esperanto (excuse my English) and needed a handy little dictionary. I picked up one for my iphone, called Mi Esperanto. It is basic and works well. When I first got it, it did not display the Esperanto word when you searched in English. I reported this bug to the developer, and not only did they fix the problem immediately, they also gave me 3 redemption codes to share. Since I don't have any close friends who 1. have iPhones, and 2. are studying Esperanto, I thought I would offer them to the folks here. Feel free to email me at
kojoto.nigra(at)gmail.com
if you are interested and I will email you back the redemption code.
Ok, after re-reading this, it sounds a bit like I work for them or am selling something. I'm not, it just sounds that way. lol!

E-bay
Thanks for the note. It's good to know some background about where Esperanto materials come from . . . Is there any other history you can share about your mother?
Yes, E-Bay is a great source for out-of-print Esperanto materials, although it takes some patience to find a specific title, since things appear there pretty randomly.
Aeodes, I think you could blog here and let people know when you've listed something of interest on E-bay . . . as for the pins, I'm not sure the category is too important as long as they're searchable by "Esperanto". I tend to search by keyword rather than category.
For books, another valuable site is www.abe.com (Advanced Book Exchange). It's a clearinghouse for used book dealers, and many Esperanto titles are available. Some are ridiculously overpriced, but sometimes you can find great bargains there.

blogging policy
The current policy is that only members of Esperanto-USA can blog here.
I suspect that ebay can provide a feed of items that match search terms. Drupal (the content management system we're using for the website) can read such feeds and present the results in a page. It might make a nice project for someone to create a page at E-USA that shows items for sale on E-Bay that are tagged with Esperanto.

Butler
Butler, Montagu C. Esperanto-English Dictionary. London: British Esperanto Association, 1967.
Absolutely valuable dictionary for exploring the range of meanings that an Esperanto word can have in English. Very detailed, with many examples. Definitely British in flavor, and now somewhat lacking in modern usage because of the publication date. Based primarily on the Plena Vortaro and its supplements. (Butler's dictionary appeared before the first edition of the PIV).
The dictionary has been out of print for some time, and there are no plans to reprint it. If you ever come across a used copy, snatch it up.

Ah! Mi havas tiun
Ah! Mi havas tiun ekzempleron! Ĝi estas verda libro :) Jes, tiu estas tre bonega vortaro. Ĝi estas mia "dua" vortaro. Kiam mi legas, kaj mi ne povas kompreni la PIV-on, mi rapide kontrolas tiun vortaron. Mi ĵus nun legis la nomon de la verkisto. Mi kompris ĝin antaŭ kvin jaroj . Ĝi estas tre netaksebla. Mi trovis ĝin ĉe la libroservon de esperanto-gb.org.
