Zamenhof, Jews, and the Making of Esperanto
I would love to attend this program, but it's a bit of a schlep from north Jersey.
The Spring 2009 issue of Pakn Treger, published by the National Yiddish Book Center, in Amherst, MA, has listed the following in its calendar:
Sunday, October 25th - Talk
The Universal Language: Zamenhof, Jews and the Making of Esperanto
Esther Schor, author, poet, and professor of English at Princeton University explores the Esperanto movement, invented by L.L. Zemenhof, in 1887, as a modern, emancipated Jew's answer to an ancient quandary; how might language itself be used to promote understanding among nations and peoples?
2:00 p.m. Cost: $6

150-a Zamenhof-jaro
I would love to attend this event, though I doubt it will be a practical possibility. But this brings up a question I can't find an answer to on this web site. This year marks Zamenhof's 150th birthday. Presumably there are commemorative events in Europe, though I have no idea what they are. But is there anything else going on here in the USA? ELNA and others here should take advantage of this occasion.

Homaranismo
Mi nun legas "La Homaranismo de D-ro L L Zamenhof" de C. Van KLEEF. Nu, mi devus membriĝi en la NYBC. Ilans Stavans foje prelegas tie kaj estas subtenanto de Esperanto. Li verkis positivan artikolon lastatempe por "The Chronicle of Higher Education."

Bonume!
Esther ĉeestis la pasintan renkontiĝon en Princtono. Tre agrabla sinjorino.

There are, I think, some
There are, I think, some interesting (to me, at least) parallels between Zamenhof's "Hilelismo" pamphlet and, say, some of the work of Mordecai Kaplan, the founder of the Reconstructionist branch of Judaism. There are very sharp distinctions between them, to be sure -- and, much as I respect Zamenhof's intentions, I think there are plenty of good reasons why Reconstructionism flourished (at least by Esperanto standards of flourishing -- approximately 2% of US Jews who belong to a synagogue belong to a Reconstructionist one)and Hilelismo didn't.
I would love to someday learn more about this from someone who knows what he's talking about. I've seen Cherpillod's book on Zamenhof and Judaism and found it somewhat disappointing, though I'm sure he's an excellent linguist. There's also
Maimon's book "La kaŝita vivo de Zamenhof"
which has a little, but perhaps not quite what I'm looking for.

What about parallels between homaranismo & Felix Adler's Ethical Culture?

Esperanto textbook in Yiddish
At the LK, Randy Dean pointed out to me that the book center has an Esperanto textbook in Yiddish that you can download for free. (By Joseph Bresler, 1909) See http://www.archive.org/details/nybc202624

Kia stranga koincido

That does sound neat
Dr. Schor has been doing good work for Esperanto in academia. She wrote a thoughtful review of Sutton's "Concise Encyclopedia of the Original Literature of Esperanto".
