How to post pictures

Stuff posted on the web can often be enhanced by adding a picture. Below is a brief guide to adding a picture (or pictures) into your postings.

We currently don't have space to host all of the pictures that people might want to post. Therefore, we encourage you to post your pictures using some other hosting service. I will provide directions below for how to post pictures using Flickr -- a free image hosting service. You can accomplish the same effects using many different services, although the particular steps may be slightly different.

First, post your picture at Flickr. Flickr provides many different ways to post pictures and has lots of documentation.

Second, look at the page with your picture and click the "All sizes" button that appears at the top of your picture. (You will need to be logged in to see the "All sizes" button.) Select which size of picture you want to embed in your posting (probably either thumbnail or small).

When you select the appropriate size, there will be a field with a snippet of HTML provided which you can use to post the picture. Copy and paste that into the webpage.

If you want to make your text wrap around the image nicely, you can change the HTML slightly: add the following between where it specifies "height" and "alt":
hspace=5 vspace=5 align=left
Those will set how much space to leave around the picture and whether to stick it on the right or the left.

You also need to set the "Input format" of the message to Full HTML. You do that with the radio buttons below where you type the body of the posting.

You can use Preview to see what your posting is going to look like before you post it, so don't worry about trying things out -- give it a shot and see what happens.

Good luck!
