Radio Polonia reaperis?!

Philip David Morgan's picture

Just when one thought the saga of Radio Polonia's Esperanto broadcasts ended back on Friday, December 15th, it seems that they had a sort of change of heart at the last minute. And so, on Saturday, Gabi Korsiarska was, amazingly enough, back at the microphone, as per yet another article from Libera Folio, whose editors have been closely following the saga.

This quick return to the airwaves was not without its problems, however. Those who access the archive recording will be greeted with a couple of false starts before the familiar signature, "Radio Polonia auxdigas elsendon en Esperanto." There will be glitches throughout the rest of the show, which may explain why the closing poem by Halina Poświatowska, "Cxiuj miaj mortoj" (read by its translator, Barbara Sokolówna), is cut off at the end.

I have no doubt that the rush to restore any sort of broadcast in la internacia lingvo was due to the unwelcome remarks by Polskie Radio's vice–president Jerzy Targalski (using Zamenhof's Jewish identity as an excuse to unplug the Esperanto bureau). If Libera Folio is correct, then we can thank someone higher than Mr. Targalski — Polskie Radio's president Krzysztof Czaba≈Ñski — for the intervention.

That said, Libera Folio has also reported that most of the Esperanto section of the website is gone, save for one pagethe link to the archived broadcasts. Grab what you can, however you can, while you can — warts and all.

After the new year, who knows what will be greeting us?

For now, clearly, the roller–coaster ride for Radio Polonia's Esperanto listeners continues.

(One personal note: Just for the way they've managed to keep me updated on things, Libera Folio deserves some change from me to their UEA account. Hopefully once we're into January.)

(Update 2006–12–20: Yes, Virginia, yet another Libera Folio update: This item reports on Radio Vatikana (!) interviewing Barbara Pietrzak and Gabi Korsiarska on Sunday; the story includes a complete transcription of the interview itself.

And here is the link to the broadcast as a low–fi MP3 file.

There is a now a special note on the Radio Polonia streaming audio page stating that the regular Esperanto broadcasts will stay on the air until after December 31st, when an Internet–exclusive program will be introduced.

For now, Radio Polonia's streaming audio page [and one on the World Radio Network's own site] are the only way to hear the current broadcasts; I am sorry to report that the Esperanto Radio Arkivo is still recycling the October 28th broadcast. Does Scott Redd know about this?)

Radio Polonia

You mention the In Touch program on Radio Polonia, comments made by Peter Gentle.

I (Peter Gentle) would like to apologize to all Esperanto speakers and learners. I did not mean to cause offense by any provocative remarks I made on that show.

I have received many emails since that program and I want to clear up something.

Up until that broadcast the English Section at Polonia received one email complaining about the demise of the Esperanto Section. Polskie Radio in general has received many emails and letters regarding this subject. One of my jobs is to stimulate emails coming into the English Section. So I made the remarks I made to try and get a few more coming our way.

Well, it worked!

I would like to say that personally my real concern was for the dedicated Esperanto broadcasters who have lost their jobs. These are my co-workers and to get the boot just before Christmas is cruel.

As I understood it the cutting of the Esperanto Section was financially motivated. Many jobs have been cut at Polskie Radio in general and it was thought that the Esperanto Section was a casualty of these cuts.

Unfortunately, remarks made by a member of the Polskie Radio board on this subject since then have rather muddied the waters a little. That is unfortunate and regrettable.

So you have my full apology for the remarks I made but they were in a spirit of stimulating debate on the subject only.

One thing I would like to clear up, however. It’s often said that the Esperanto Section had ‘half of all radio Polonia’s listeners’. This is not correct as WE DON’T KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE LISTEN TO RADIO POLONIA. We do not have any way of measuring our listenership. Where I think this figure comes from is from the fact that Esperanto Section has for a long time now received around HALF OF ALL THE CORRESPONDENCE.

As you Esperantists are prolific letter writers I think that any projection of listenership from correspondence is going to be misleading.

That said thank you very much for the interest at the demise of the Esperanto Section and Polskie Radio is thankful for all letters and emails received on this subject.

I have sent this email as a private person and of course the thoughts contained within are mine and mine only.

Send comments to Radio Polonia in English

Bob Williamson's picture

The Dec.15 edition of "In Touch", the Friday listeners-letters portion of Radio Polonia in English (c. 41:00 - 47:15 of the hour-long program), demonstrated some ignorance about our international language that you could help correct. They invited reaction from listeners (even Esperantists, if any exist). Hoss Firooznia and Boris Kolker have already encouraged readers of elna-membroj@yahoogroups.com to send comments (how do we get our Australian friends to help?), and it would be good to remind the people of Radio Polonia that we still care. If it's really "all about the money", then why cut the relatively low-cost section that used to draw more listener letters than all other language sections combined? It's a poor (some might say foolish) argument.
By the way, I agree that Libera Folio has provided excellent coverage of this sad story.
