Hjalmar Söderberg was a popular Swedish author at the beginning of the 20th century, and his short stories apparently remain popular even today. The 14 short stories in this collection are taken from three of his collections. They are: "A Dog Without a Master", about the life of a dog whose master has died; "Drizzle", about the relationship between greyness and sinning; "The Sacrament of Communion", on the topic of dirty stories and for whom they are appropriate; "The Charcoal Drawing", about the meaning of a meaningless piece of minor art; "Archimedes' Point", about the explanation, or lack of an explanation, for an obvious paradox; "The Parish-Master's Cows", about how the parish-master met his wife; "The Kiss", about the mental processes, during the first kiss, of two young people; "A Dream of Old Age", about a dream of a non-pleasing future; "Gärda", about meeting one's sometime beloved again; "The Burning City", about a child's failure to understand the distinction between a picture and reality; "Poets and People", about the technique of poets; "Åge", about a widow and her son — all that remains of the husband — in a park; "Signe", about the creative process; and "Graveyard Arabesque", about a Swedish burial in a Danish graveyard.
